The Day Everything Changed

In my life I've met thousands of people living in quiet desperation. I've lived in 3 different countries, yet the yearning for relevancy and respect is universal among us all. After years and years of experience, I've finally found a lifestyle that's right for me... and it's worth sharing. It gives me freedom to choose what I do with each day with my time, my resources, and most of all, with the people I love.

It all started years ago while I was doing surgery. The doctor doing the general anesthesia kept yapping in my ear about leveraged income. "What!?! You mean I'll get paid even if I don't come to work?..."

I had just graduated at the top of my class from dental school. In Australia where I lived at the time, everyone went to medical school for the first few years, then us dentists branched off to learn dentistry, oral surgery, etc. The dentist might be the only doctor in a small country town so we had to know enough medicine to deal with and to prescribe... whatever.

I went to work in a medium sized town called Bendigo in the state of Victoria. It had about 70,000 people at the time. There was only one traveling oral surgeon from another medium sized town that came to Bendigo just one day a month. Every dentist in Bendigo was trying to get their surgical patients in to see him on his monthly visit.

All us dentists had been trained to surgically remove wisdom teeth, no matter how difficult, so my boss and I just had this arrangement where we would take our patients to a doctor's office in town every Thursday to do surgery under general anesthesia. That's how I met Dr. Keith (his first name, not last) who did the general anesthesia. There we operated on small children who couldn't tolerate regular dentistry.

The other people we operated on were those who had impacted wisdom teeth and wanted to be "put out" so they didn't know what was going on. Even though I graduated well in my class, I was still a newbie and trying to figure out the best techniques.

One day I was figuring out a tricky wisdom tooth surgery when Dr. Keith started yammering in my ear about "leveraged income." I was only 28 at the time and I had never heard of the concept. He was age 64 at the time and was getting ready to retire on his leveraged income. I figured he must know something about these things.

You see, most doctors, dentists, and other professionals who own their practices totally suck at setting up retirement plans as they go along. I didn't know about 401Ks or IRAs or investing or any of that back when time would have been on my side to earn compound interest over the years.

And I certainly didn't know at that time about leveraged income. After Keith explained things to me in a little more detail, all while I was operating on someone, I had a thought I'd never thought. It's quite amazing the conversations that go on during surgery while you, the patient, are unconscious. I suddenly said,

"You mean I can get paid every day, even if I don't come to work?"

He nodded his head in the affirmative. What a thought! What a concept! What the bleep had I been studying all those years to become a dental surgeon when I could have been learning to earn leveraged income!?!

Thankfully the surgery went well through all of that, but THAT DAY changed my life. I couldn't stop thinking about leveraged income from then on. It became kind of an obsession with me to learn all I could.

I've had several stops and starts along the way and it's taken me years to find out the right way to earn leveraged income for me. You can set up rental properties like Robert and Kim Kiyosaki taught me (they were patients of mine for a while when I lived in Phoenix). It turns out real estate wasn't my thing.

You can write books or plays or create other intellectual properties and hope they sell well enough to earn leveraged income. That's what I learned from my friend, Marti, who is a gifted author and publisher. I actually wrote a little book called "Real Mom's Dental Pocket Guide: Cavities" because of those early experiences where mom's didn't know how to keep their kids' teeth from rotting out of their mouths. It turns out writing books is actually harder than I thought.

I've tried network marketing in 6 different companies and actually had success at it where I made a good living. However, the networking lifestyle that I was taught still required hustle, bustle, traveling, doing presentations in homes and hotel conference rooms, all while watching people make poor decisions that kept them in the rut they were in. Why do we always hover back toward our "known," -- our comfort zone?

Home-based business my tush!!! (keeping it clean here) I was always on the road.

The absolutely wonderful thing about network marketing is that I also met some fantastic people. I have friends online that I've communicated with for years, although I've never met them face to face. With modern communication tools, I now have friends all over the world that I love and cherish.

But thankfully after all my trying and experimentation, I have finally found my thing -- attraction-style marketing through social media. I've finally found what works for me and my (believe it or not) introverted personality to earn myself leveraged income. I still work, but I work on my time and in a way (think AUTOMATION) that thrills me and allows me to help other people grow while I continue to grow myself. Helping others thrills me.

I'm happy to help folks who seriously want to up their online networking game, but who also understand these three things:

1.  We are each individually responsible for our own thoughts, words, and actions.

2.  We are each individually responsible, not for the things that happen to us beyond our control (like weather, wars and the economy), but for our responses to them. We are responsible for how we respond to whatever life dishes us.

3.  We are in command of our own lives because of the God-given gift of agency to choose our own way, in any given circumstance (thank you to Viktor Frankl for this last thought).
